Infrared Detector Arrays for Astronomy

چکیده

Use of infrared detector arrays in astronomy began roughly 20 years ago, and our detection capabilities in parts of this spectral range have doubled about every seven months since then. A variety of approaches are now used for detector arrays operating from 1 μm to 1 mm and beyond. They include direct hybrid arrays of InSb and HgCdTe photodiodes that operate from 0.6μm to 5μm, and of Si:As impurity band conduction detectors from 5 μm to 28 μm; a number of approaches to photoconductive detector arrays in the far-infrared; and bolometer arrays read out by transistors or superconducting devices in the far-infrared through millimeter-wave spectral range. The underlying principles behind these approaches are discussed. The application of these principles is illustrated through detailed discussion of a number of state-of-the-art detector arrays. 77 A nn u. R ev . A st ro . A st ro ph ys . 2 00 7. 45 :7 711 5. We are developing two-dimensional 16 × 25 pixel detector arrays of both unstressed and stressed Ge:Ga photoconduc-tive detectors for far-infrared astronomy from SOFIA. The arrays, based on earlier 5 × 5 detector arrays used on the KAO, will be for our new instrument, the Far Infrared Field Imaging Line Spectrometer (FIFI LS). The unstressed Ge:Ga detector array will cover the wavelength range f...

OPTICAL AND INFRARED DETECTORS FOR ASTRONOMY Basic principles to state-of-the-art

Detectors play a key role in an astronomical observatory. In astronomy, the role of the telescope and instrument is to bring light to a focus in effect, the telescope-instrument act as “spectacles”. The detectors, meanwhile, have the critical role of sensing the light the detectors are the “eyes” of an observatory. The performance of an astronomical observatory is directly dependent upon the pe...

Calibrating Array Detectors

The development of sensitive large format imaging arrays for the infrared promises to provide revolutionary capabilities for space astronomy. For example, the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) on SIRTF will use four 256× 256 arrays to provide background limited high spatial resolution images of the sky in the 3 to 8 μm spectral region. In order to reach the performance limits possible with this gene...

History of infrared detectors

This paper overviews the history of infrared detector materials starting with Herschel’s experiment with thermometer on February 11th, 1800. Infrared detectors are in general used to detect, image, and measure patterns of the thermal heat radia− tion which all objects emit. At the beginning, their development was connected with thermal detectors, such as ther− mocouples and bolometers, which ar...
